Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas
Each year, millions of people spend weeks planning for and getting ready for the festivities of Halloween. But there are just as many people out there who wait until the last possible moment to even begin thinking about costumes. Ideally, what costume to wear should be given some serious time and thought. It’s not like decorations and candy that can wait until October 31st in the afternoon. Last minute Halloween costumes, like their planned counterparts, can be just as creative and unique.
The important thing to remember is to stay calm rather than panicking. Your costume can still be good even though the costume stores are sold out. Rationally, catalog the various items around your home. Cardboard boxes, loose fabric, glitter, and face paint can all be transformed from random items in a junk drawer into a great Halloween costume.
The gold standard for last minute costumes is, and most likely always will be, the ghost. A sharp pair of scissors and a plain white bed sheet are all you need. You could even throw a humorous twist in by using something other than white. A tie dye ghost would be hilarious! This outfit will also most likely garner you a number of compliments, due to its classic appeal.
Those old and unused cardboard boxes taking up space in your garage can also become a memorable and creative robot costume. Enough of them to cover your abdomen, legs, and arms, some paint, and a few hours to let it dry is literally all you need. Cut holes in the tops and bottoms of the various sized boxes and paint robotic graphics onto them with the paint.
You might find something good in your closet or attic. If your parents or grandparents will let you go through their old things, you could discover a gem. Period themed costumes are both easily accomplished and a guaranteed hit at any Halloween party. An old suede jacket and hat or a 50s skirt and pink neckerchief, or any other combination is all you need.
You could put together a ninja costume in just minutes with a pair of black sweat pants, a black tee shirt and a bandana. Do you have younger siblings who might be willing to loan you some toys like plastic swords or throwing stars? If not, you could swing by Toys R Us on the way to the pumpkin patches orange county and pick up a couple of items.
A zombie costume can be accomplished with just some fake blood and light foundation make-up. Just mess up your hair so that it’s sticking out in all directions, and put the foundation and fake blood on your face, neck and arms. Or just wear your regular clothes with some fake blood on them. It will look like you planned it out well in advance. Think up a good backstory to go with your costume.
For the hopelessly last minute planners, even pajamas will do. Other last minute possibilities include a bathrobe and slippers or a colorful matching pair of thermal underwear. These may not seem like costumes to you, but it will look like you had planned it for weeks. Wear your hair in pigtails or carry a large lollipop around with you and you could pass your outfit off as being a child or toddler, a humorous costume for an adult.
Don’t skip that party just because you have nothing to wear. Look around the house, put something together and find a pumpkin patches San Diego and have a great time!

The Sensible Way To A Succesful Winter Holiday
Let’s be honest, when it comes to summer holidays, it isnt hard to find a great destination at a great prive, especially with ton special offers and deals available from thousands of tour operators offering the latest and greatest destinations, but putting together the perfect winter holiday presents far great challenges and are just generally much harder to plan and ultimately enjoy.
There are a ton of horror stories out there about summer holidays that have gone wrong, from food poisoning to half finished hotel rooms with no roof in place right through to nightmares about dog meat being used for the burgers, but few will have heard about the equally horrible stories which come from a bad winter holiday or an adventure holiday that went wrong.
The one thing you have to fall back on during summer is the sunshine, but on a skiing holiday, having to spend your time away from your half finished hotel will probably give you frostbite and although it might be sunny, it will certainly be a darn site colder. Yes, ok, you could just take out travel insurance to cover most of what goes wrong on a winter holiday, but it won’t insure against bad weather, so choosing the right location and the right time of year becomes imperative.
If you fail to get the right place, you could be facing a week of terrible weather and a loss of ski time, unable to venture out on to the slopes and that winter sports and ski insurance you took out won’t be able to help you at all. What happens if you turn an ankle or worse, break a limb? There is some good news on this, most travel insurance will cover you for these things and although you might be ending your holiday early, at least you wont be forking out for medical care, so its really important to take extra care, rest often and dont get too cocky.
It’s easy to think you can take on major challenges quickly, especially if you are new and learn fast, but dont be tempted. No matter how tempted you are by a new challenge, think twice before doing it, especially if its due to peer pressure, you may well end up regretting it.
If you are off somewhere slightly warmer during our winter months and intend to be backpacking in Asia, mountaineering in the USA or perhaps bungee jumping in Australia then whatever you do, make sure you take out specialist adventure travel insurance.
Unlike other standard travel insurance, it will help cover you for things like bungee jumping or rock climbing and you will have the peace of mind you and your family need to be able to go out and enjoy things without worry.
Eco-Friendly Holiday Greetings
The holidays will be here before you know it, and you definitely want to celebrate the season in an eco-friendly manner. The season is a time to give and each year there are many cards and gifts that are given to celebrate this wonderful time. You don’t want to be excessive during the season and end up damaging the environment. The good news is that there are some great practices you can use this holiday season for eco-friendly holiday greetings and gift giving.
Use Wrappers that are Recycled
If you are sending out Christmas packages or just giving gifts to those in your home, use wrappers that are recycled. Instead of purchasing brand new wrapping paper, use some things you have around your home. Consider using some of those old newspapers you have around or use wrapping paper from the last holiday season if you have it saved up. This way you don’t go out and purchase new paper. You’ll be recycling while giving your gifts and it saves money too!
Recycled Cards or Going with Electronic Greetings
Hundreds of thousands of cards are sent out during the holiday season each year. That’s a whole lot of paper being wasted. After all, many of those cards just end up in the trash at the end of the season anyway. Instead of sending out regular holiday greeting cards, think about purchasing recycle cards – cards that are made out of recycled paper. An even better option is to go with electronic greetings when you can. You can save a whole lot of paper if you send holiday greetings online and you’ll save money on postage too. You can also create your own greeting cards. This is a great activity for the whole family, and a great way to be creative.
Cut Off the Lights
One way to share the spirit of the holiday season is with Christmas lights. It’s wonderful to show off your holiday spirit in lights. Of course, leaving those lights on all night every night is a bad idea. It can raise your electric bills and can overtax your electric circuits as well. You can still share your holiday greetings in the form of lights, but once the guests go home and you’re going to bed, turn off those lights. It’s much better for the environment to only have them on a few hours instead of all night long.
Check Out Printers that are Eco Friendly
If you still want to send out paper greeting cards, check to find printers that are eco friendly. Many will print greeting cards with eco friendly practices. Some companies use recycled inks and paper scraps to print greeting cards. It may cost you a bit more, but you are working to save the environment.
You don’t have to give up your holiday spirit for the environment. You can have an eco-friendly holiday and send out plenty of greetings with these great eco-friendly tips for the holiday season.

Nashville Kicks Off Earth Day Celebration Early
Next week marks the 40th annual Earth Day and Nashville will start celebrations early with a free daylong event at Centennial Park on Saturday.
Observed on April 22, Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin established the observance to bring environmental issues to the political forefront. He’s written that the movement toward the observance began in 1962 when he convinced President John F. Kennedy to launch a tour across the United States to raise environmental awareness.
The tour was not successful in putting environmental concerns on the national political agenda, but Sen. Nelson continued to speak about the growing crisis – often on college campuses. He said it was college campus protests against the Vietnam War that made him think students and grassroots efforts were the way to get attention for environmental issues.
“If we could tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause, we could generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda,” said Sen. Nelson writing about Earth Day’s history. “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”
Earth Day observances are held around the world now and organizers estimate that more than 1 billion people will celebrate this year.
Nashville holds its 9th annual Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park, an appropriate location as Centennial Park was the beginning of Nashville’s public park system.
This year’s festival, with the theme “Strike a Chord,” will help the community take another step toward Mayor Karl Dean’s goal of making Nashville the greenest city in the Southeast. The free event will include more than 60 booths sponsored by community and environmental groups and government agencies with hands-on activities for all ages.
The celebration also features two areas with live music. A youth stage starts up at 11 a.m. and continues through 1 p.m. with a percussion ensemble, step performances, Polynesian dance and others.
At 1 p.m., performers hit the Main Stage and continue throughout the day. The lineup includes Homemade Water, The Apache Relay, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek and banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck Acoustic with Friends.
Folks can take part in scavenger hunt; a youth area where children can make reused and recycled eco art and crafts, and more; and the Food and Farming area with lots of exhibitors and workshops ranging from foraging for wild edibles and growing your own food to preserving seasonal foods and composting kitchen scraps for a better garden.
The event also features a Green Model Home where experts at E3 Innovate demonstrate how easy it is to reduce your home’s energy needs. The model home will have examples of eco-friendly interior and exterior materials, and renewable energy systems such as a geothermal heat pump and solar panels.
Another area lets you donate your broken-down bike or bike accessories to help kids learn bike mechanics and bike safety and possibly take home a free ride. ReCycle Your Cycle accepts tax-deductible donations of bicycles and related items on behalf of Oasis Center.
And the Merchant Village features booths and vendors with environmentally-friendly items such as locally-made clothing, organic products, locally-made food, daily-use consumables, environmental publications, and other green items.
So whether it’s for the music, the food, the free family activities, the money-saving tips, or the chance to teach your kids (and yourself) how to live greener, be sure to head to Centennial Park on Saturday.
