Green Gifts Don’t Have to Be Dull Gifts
We are all being told about the impact we have on our environment and increasingly we are becoming more conscious of our actions and lifestyle choices. Part of this is what we buy as a consumer not just for ourselves but for other people too.
When it comes to birthdays and Christmas presents many of us are reluctant to push green products and eco friendly gifts on other people but buying somebody a green gift doesn’t mean it has to be dull.
There are plenty of fantastic green gift ideas that regardless of being eco-friendly are fun, innovative and make great presents for nearly every member of the family.
One of the best places to start is the garden. Not only are there great gift ideas for the green gardener like composters and raised planting beds but there are other garden ideas for kids too. Wormeries are fantastic fun for the younger children while solar garden lighting help those patio parties swing way into the evening.
Around the home and office there are no shortage of gift ideas either. From pure wool duvets for those cosy warm nights cuddled up to quick cup kettles and recycled clocks, there is a great gift idea for almost everybody.
Eco friendly doesn’t have to be low tech either. There are many great green innovations, from water powered calculators, magnoballs for removing limescale to clock work radios with inbuilt cell phone chargers and various solar powered gadgets that are both useful and green.
So whether its father’s day, a birthday, anniversary or wedding, don’t be frightened of thinking green when it comes to buying a gift, you may find not just a great eco-gift but a great gift full stop.

8 Amazing Gadgets You Really Must Have
A slump in economic climate inevitably inspires a whole new level of creativity from an assembly of competent entrepreneurs, leading to profitable economic times and booming businesses. It is part of a natural cycle. The superiority of automation and technology that exists on the globe today has freed us from the bonds of putting all our efforts into basic survival. We have time on our hands for expanding our mental horizons and according to the marketplace, far more disposable income than ever before. As technology moves forward in quantum leaps and bounds it unceasingly delivers us gadgets and toys that improve our quality of life and give us plenty of entertainment value. Here are some of the most interesting gadgets (some not quite on the market yet) you will want to have the moment you know they exist…
Electronic Grocery Tags
This is a gadget for shopping soon to be available that will potentially speed up the amount of time you spend a checkout counter at the grocery store. It’s a radio frequency identification tag for groceries being developed by researchers from two universities – South Korea’s Sunchon National University and Houston’s Rice University. The tag incorporates semiconducting ink containing carbon nanotubes for printing electronics on plastic and paper that will emit a radio frequency. A frequency detector at the checkout instantly detects everything in your cart so you get to walk out with your cart in seconds flat, especially if you remembered to bring your own “green” canvas shopping bags and pack your items at your car. This is the same technology currently being used with passports that allow travelers to instantly pass through airport security check points. If you don’t like the idea of your food broadcasting inside your pantry, the radio waves can be blocked by covering the tags with aluminum foil.
LED Light Cake Tray
Ever suffered through the embarrassment of baking a perfectly scrumptious, triple-layer chocolate cake for your dinner guests but totally botch it when you try to slice the correct number of pieces? This gadget for bakers is your savior. It’s a 12-inch cake tray with LED lights that show you exactly where to make the slice. After pressing the power button it gives you the option of 2 to 12 slices. (FYI – do the math; the lucky people using the 2-slice option get a 6-inch piece of cake.) This amazing tray includes a spinning feature that helps guide your hand while topping it with icing. It also plays a chipper rendition of “Happy Birthday” if you are a person unwilling to sing out loud in public. The cake tray is sold through Amazon for about $40 US.
Fish School
Pet lovers understand the feeling of degradation that happens when someone uncouthly accuses them of having stupid goldfish. Now you can prove them wrong and keep them quiet forever. The Fish School is a training gadget for goldfish, guppies and other small species that teaches them to do rather impressive tricks. Based on a trial and reward method you will soon have your fish swimming through hoops, playing football and eating out of your hand. It comes with an excellent instruction DVD and detailed written instructions. You could have guessed it’s available at “iwantoneofthose.com” for 24.99.
Flexible Solar Panels
Admit it – you would not mind getting more exercise and fresh air but the thought of being outdoors long enough to run out of charge on your cell phone or laptop computer weighs more heavily on your mind than the extra pounds you need to lose. There is a solution! Flexible or foldable solar panels were created for people that like to hike, backpack, fish or sail the open waters but cannot live without their portable electronic devices. The panels can roll or fold up into a tight, neat package and easily tossed into a bag or a backpack. They are made for rugged use and come with lengthy extension cords and attachments for easily charging 12V batteries. This is enough juice to run your electronics and laptops. “Flexsolarcells.com” sells them through eBay and Amazon anywhere from $80 to $3,000 US.
Heineken Bot
While this is no replacement for a live barmaid, the Heineken Bot does have appeal for bar patrons even if they don’t drink Heineken. The robot, designed by the super techies at Middlesex University, drifts around the bar top on sturdy wheels waiting to serve those in need. It cheerfully dispenses a full cup of lager to the patron that waves his/her hands above it head. A sonar sensing device on the droid lets it know it has a customer. It is not currently sold to individual consumers, but you can contact your Heineken distributor if you are a bar owner.
Touch Screen Skin
Touch screen computer fanatics will be thrilled to know research has taken the “touch” concept to a whole new level. Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft’s Redmond research lab have teamed up and are working on a prototype system dubbed “Skinput” that uses your skin as the screen and input device. A micro-sized pico projector (used in handheld devices) embedded in an armband projects images on the user’s hand or forearm. When the user taps on an image the device acoustically determines which icon has been touched and activates it. In effect your own body becomes your computer screen. The technology is still in early stages of development.
Ultimate Lounge Chair
The ability to relax after a long, hard day at the office has become the focus of entrepreneurs attempting to grab a portion of the ever-growing basket of disposable income. Hammacher Schlemmer does it best. It manufactures the Vibroacoustic Relaxation Lounger that cannot be beat, even if you feel like you have been. It sends low frequency sound vibrations through the lounge chair’s mattress for soothing the mind and body. It comes with headphones that play calming music or any music of your choice through a CD or MP3 player. The soft foam cushion contours to your body, surrounding you in total comfort. It sells for just under $2,000 US.
USB Coffee Warmer
Here is a gadget that will make you very happy if you have a laptop computer and drink hot beverages. That would be most of us right? It is a “plug & play” USB powered coffee warmer that keeps your coffee, tea or hot cocoa steaming. There is no driver required for this nifty little gadget; simply plug it into a convenient USB port on your laptop and away you go. On the flip side, if you prefer chilled beverages there are refrigeration models available that keep your drink cold. Either model is usually available through Amazon or eBay for around $10 unless they are out. It is one of those things you just “have to have.”

The Short Term Effects of Our New Green Economy
Thinking “Green” is not only a trendy way of thinking, but a probable way out of the economic mess our societies face, after the breakdown of our previous economic system. Solely because the “Green” economy, is the only way forward, if the effects of the industrial revolution on our environment, are too be reversed.
One major area of the “Green” Economy is the reinvention of how we use our resources, and how we create a sustainable economy. Simply moving away from our dependence on oil, coal and nuclear energy dependence, without affecting the current way we live now. This thinking is not feasible, because our existing “Green” technology will never completely substitute more traditional energies, until we start using it and develop it through our use of these technologies.
Simply meaning we have to “change,” from a consumer society, to a part consumer society, that consumes wisely and not recklessly. Meaning we have to save energy, whilst implementing new energies until they develop enough to match our expectations, if we still want to live the way we did before the crash of 2008. Otherwise, we have to travel less distances, consume less, recycle more and ultimately create new industries that provide work for those employed in now obsolete industries before the “Green” Revolution. This includes the automobile, coal, steel and plastics industries.
Solar Energy is the natural successor to replacing most of our traditional energy sources. it is relatively expensive to install, but the benefits are long term, because its free energy. One drawback is that solar energy depends on us cutting back, and saving energy as well, in a society were electrical appliances are common. Therefore we have to step back in time and either depend on more energy saving products or simply turn off many of the gadgets and appliances in our homes, that make life more convenient. This is a lifestyle change, that depends on us using less, and working more leaving perfectly good appliances in our garages or basements.
Already, we have the technology to build hydrogen, or solar powered Cars, yet most of us drive petrol based Cars and our automobile industries depend on selling petrol based Cars. An industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people, that in economies facing high unemployment, somehow need to switch over to using these energies, without adding more unemployed to our faltering economies.
Green “transport” means that we may have to travel less, use more public transport and rethink the way we use our cars. Simply because existing “green” technology, will not match the way we are used to traveling now. But will develop, like the petrol based automobile did, step by step over a period of time. We need to change our attitude towards the way we use transport, and sacrifice our dependence on the automobile as it is today, before we reap the benefits of this revolution in transport.
There is no doubt that we need to change, and sacrifice in order to make this new “green” revolution work. Just like in the early 18th Century, we changed from farm workers to factory workers, but ultimately this engine of change will bring opportunities, and in the long term benefit us all.

How to Raise Green Kids
One big concern that parents often have about going green is how they can get their kids involved and help them to develop their own affinity for protecting our one home. In a society where the cultural norm is to consume as much as you can as fast as you can with little regard for the consequences, it is vital that parents start to cultivate some green values within the next generation.
What we need are kids who can step up to be leaders and pioneers. Kids who will realize the importance of community and that it extends beyond themselves to everyone around them and all the organisms on this planet. It is all connected. So how do we teach kids to value green causes?
1. Model green values for them. I think most parents would agree that it is better to teach by example. If we want our kids to value green causes then they must see us actively seeking ways to protect our health and the health of the planet.
2. Help them recycle. Set up colorful recycling bins and label them – glass, aluminum, tin, cardboard, paperboard, etc. Make sure everyone in the family knows that nothing goes into the garbage if it can be recycled. Beyond that, engage your kids in a discussion at the grocery store about only buying products that can be recycled and skipping the ones that cannot. For older kids, encourage them to find out how they can recycle their old cell phones, mp3 players, and other techno gadgets.
3. Volunteer your family to participate in community clean up events at state parks and nearby waterways. It is a great way to spend time together, meet new people with green values, and do something valuable for the environment.
4. Provide green entertainment. There are numerous eco board games on the market that promote environmental awareness and conservation. What family doesn’t like playing games together? There are also some really good green movies you can watch together like March of the Penguins, Fergully, and The 11th Hour. Kids also enjoy trips to local zoos, conservatories, and wildlife preserves. Opportunities abound to have fun AND educate about the importance of environmental protection.
5. Spend time outdoors. There is a popular saying that you will not protect what you do not love. With nature deficit disorder afflicting many these days it is important that we spend time with our families outside and help them grow to love nature and the outdoors. Take walks, ride your bikes together, go camping, identify birds and bug species, look for edible plants and flowers…help them to understand why YOU love nature so much and why we have to protect it.
Here is to helping your children to grow up GREEN!

How to Make Existing Buildings Green
Green building fad has just hit the world. Majority of new buildings are being conceived with green concepts now. It is very simple and easy to plan a green building when you are conceiving it but immense potential exists waiting to be tapped in case of old buildings. It is very clear that you can not bring about comprehensive changes in to the existing buildings but you can certainly tweak around a little wee bit to get appreciable savings. Let me first explain as what makes a building green. Is living green just a fad or it is some thing more than that.
A green building is expected to
- Use maximum natural resources like air, sun, natural light, waste heat, atmospheric heat.
- Minimize on the wastage like water, effluents, heat, solids from the building.
- Use gadgets which economize on energy efficiency.
Whole world has awoken to the concept of green buildings. But, in case of existing buildings, very little is being done. Some of the existing buildings have been so designed that they practically guzzle up lots of fuel and electricity with scant attention being paid to avoid any wastage. But its common senses that every building on this planet can contribute its bit towards conservation of depleting natural resources. The list below is an indicative one and is not exhaustive.
Existing buildings which are being considered for conversion to green can be divided in to two groups, one with minor changes and the other with major changes.
Minor changes:
- Saving water: Call your plumber or check for yourself all the taps and pipes for leakages. A single leaking tap can per day waste enough water which can meet the complete daily requirement of at least two – three persons.
- Check all your flushing cisterns. Be sure that no leakages are taking place. Replace valves if need be.
- Carryout water audit of your building. In case you are not sure please call experts who will be able to provide you with deeper insights.
- Separate out the waste water from toilets and the other from bathrooms and kitchen. While waste water from toilets can be used only after treatment but the discharge from bathrooms, Reverse Osmosis plant and kitchen can be used for gardening, car washing etc after little bit of filtration.
- Saving power: Install capacitors to improve power factor. If you are not sure then seek advice from experts. Replace all incandescent lamps with energy efficient Compact Florescent Lamps.
- If found appropriate, go for task based lighting instead of general lighting to conserve power.
- Lighting for common areas and compounds should be timer controlled.
- Intelligently program your lifts to optimize and conserve electricity.
- Install proximity switches for board and conference rooms. These switches sense the human presence and if area is not inhabited for considerable period of time, the power simply goes off.
Major changes
- Major changes may relate to placing solar thermal and solar photovoltaic systems. Solar thermal for heating purposes and photovoltaic systems for trapping solar energy in to storage batteries. Solar panels which generate electricity comes in various ratings of 6, 10, 12, 37, 70,100,160 and even higher watts. These can be combined in parallel to have much larger banks which can provide many kilowatts of electricity. The power so generated can be fed in to the grids or can be stored in battery for future use.
- Solar collectors which form part of solar thermal systems can be used in preheating and heating of the water. These come in various sizes based on capacity of water they are expected to handle.
- Building integrated photovoltaic systems can be installed on many of the existing buildings. However a detailed study of the building is necessary to ascertain whether the installed solar panels will get proper orientation so that they always face towards the sun.
There are many suggestions which can come out after one goes for energy, safety and water audit. Continue to look out for this space.

Cheap Green Laser Pointers – Don’t Let a Deal Trick You
With so many different cheap green laser pointers available online today, it can be difficult to determine where to actually buy one and get the best deal for your effort. Here is a quick check list of things to keep in mind whenever you are considering to buy a laser online so you can avoid the common pitfalls of “deals” that are not all they appear.
1. “What’s too good to be true, usually is” – You may have heard this saying before when it comes to buying anything online, when it comes to cheap laser pointers this is something you want to keep in mind. Because of the level of craftsmanship needed to produce a high quality pointer that will actually last you, a lot of the cheaper models available are just that, too cheap for comfort. If you have ever looked online you can find different green laser pointers running different powers for many different prices. The trick is that the cheapest models don’t perform well and do not offer safety features that will protect your eyes, with the cheapest varieties you run the risk of eye damage to yourself and any spectators. When a 100mW is available for less than $100 I would seriously scrutinize it and plain old not trust it.
2. Value – It may seem like a no brainer to just go straight away for the cheapest price you find online, but that is exactly what it becomes, a “no brain” decision. It may not make sense how some lasers will have similar specifications and supposed performance but vary so greatly in cost. The difference comes down to longevity (expected life time), quality of laser diode, warranty period, design, collimation (thinness of beam), and more. The cheapest deals online are not always the best and in fact you are running the risk of buying a laser pointer that will feel flimsy and burn out in less than a week.
3. Warranty - the cheapest laser pointers online will simply not offer you any type of warranty or guarantee that the gadget will perform how the company claims it will. This means you can pull it out of the box, pop in fresh batteries, and it either burns out or doesn’t work and the retailer will just turn a blind eye. They have your money, and you are out of luck. You want to ensure that any laser pointer you are going to buy, especially at a good cheap price, offers some time of protection and warranty to your purchase, at least 30-90 days. So if anything is out of place you are protected.
Cheap green laser pointers don’t have to be pieces of junk that burn out and don’t perform, but only if you know where to look and buy one that meets a few simple industry standards. There are plenty of retailers out there more than willing to sell you garbage and run away with your cash in their pocket. Do a little research, see what type of reputation any laser brand has, what you can expect from the green laser, what type of life time and warranty are offered you if you buy, and don’t just flat out jump at what seems like a great deal. Often times with high tech gadgets, a little more research or small investment makes all the difference between something that breaks quick or something that will last you potentially years to come.
James advocates the use of various forms of laser technology in everyday life and prefers cheap green laser pointers from trusted retailers who meet a few obvious industry standards, like warranties, email support, and quality craftsmanship. He has seen too many people get burned by supposed “deals” that end up being junk.

Green Lifestyle
The buzz word today is Green. Every syndicated network is talking about green. It is almost impossible to watch the evening news without seeing a segment on a global warming issue or a report on a going green project in your state. Green is the subject all over the world and has been for a number of years in other countries. It has been gaining popularity in the United States the past few years.
Going Green is more than changing light bulbs and learning a few new words. Going Green is a lifestyle that until recently, only a few could imagine and a smaller group would consider.
A green lifestyle is living day to day as efficiently as you can. A lifestyle that consumes less electricity, less fuel, conserves water and recycles unwanted items. Sound easy? People from all around the globe are doing one or more and some are going beyond.
We as consumers, share the responsibility to learn how products are produced and how they were brought to market. So, we can buy products that were produced efficiently and use products that operate efficiently. We owe it to ourselves and the planet to find solutions to conserve energy, consume less of the products made from crude oil and buy from companies that are responsible for their C02 emissions.
Most importantly, use available information to make decisions on what products to buy. If we are diligent in our research we will find companies that are responsible for their Co2 Emissions when making their products. Ultimately, our buying habits will dictate how manufacturers produce and deliver the products.
Going green is the responsible thing to do but, you don’t have to change overnight. Imagine if, 30% of the population cut back on electricity by simply turning off lights, televisions, computers and electrical gadgets around the house. The responsible thing to do. The energy demand could drop by 10%. That is a good start.
What can an individual do? Investigate and learn new tips and tricks to conserve water and save energy around your environment. When you buy replacement light bulbs buy the efficient style. The manufacturers are developing stylish models for most fixtures. If you are thinking of remodeling or upgrading appliances choose Energy Star rated appliances. They will serve you well and save on electricity costs. There are models for all budgets.
If you don’t recycle your waste then do a little research. The landfills are bulging with recyclable materials. FYI… There are plastic containers that are not recyclable. Learn to identify them and avoid buying them if you can. Learn how to store recyclable materials and where to take your recycle containers. If your city does not have a recycle program then call them. Let them know that you are interested in recycling. They may offer some alternative locations or better yet start a recycle program in your area.
Look for ways to save electricity around the house. Turn off your lights, televisions, computers and fans when you leave a room or when you leave the house. Don’t forget to unplug battery chargers. Take a close look around your home for drafts leaking doors and windows. Many simple measures can be taken to seal a home.
A programmable thermostat for your heat and air conditioning unit is worth the investment. You can raise or lower the temperature setting when you leave the home and readjust the temperature before you arrive. They are easy to set-up and saves a bundle on your electricity bill.
Our planet is partly warming because of the greenhouse effect of Co2 emissions accumulating in our atmosphere. A large percent of Co2 emissions comes from the process of converting coal into electric energy and crude oil into a usable products. Products like gas, diesel and plastics. Plastics are used for almost everything and are becoming one of the biggest burdens on our landfills.
For every product that is produced, a little Co2 emission is released into our atmosphere that warms our planet a little more.
With a change in our individual lifestyle we can conserve energy. By simply, being more responsible for the products and the energy we consume, collectively as a community we can make a huge difference. It is the responsible thing to do. In the near future, I see a community where many people are joining together to share ideas, learn from each other and work together on common goals.
The Global Warming affects us all and it is going to take support from all of us to address it. For more on this subject visit http://goinggreenservices.com

But if you don’t do your assignment and get your ideas together, chances are even your green laser pointer adventure can end up to be a disaster. That is where we get in and remind you these few tips and what to remember before you buy what you really want.
1. What output power range will you be needing?
More commonly green lasers come in 532nm at 5mW, there are also tweaked and high powered versions that come in 15mW to 500mW. Some are even more powerful and can burn plastic, pop ballons or can be seen 50 miles away in the sky.
2. What is your purpose in buying your gadget?
Is it going to be used for your astronomy class or for party purposes, either way it is always an eye candy to see these babies in action. Looking at some add-on’s can make a difference when it comes to your laser gadget like collimating lenses to make the beam thinner or wider, water proofing , solid casings or shock protection are a definite nod to make the life of green laser pointer last longer than usual.
3. What is your Budget?
As with any other purchases, the enthusiast must consider the amount of money he/she wants to spend for this device. Prices range from $50-$70, others may be cheaper, some may be more pricey but the ultimate catch is that going cheap may sometimes be not the best idea. Spending wisely at the same time looking at quality is always the dogma when making any purchase.
4. How long would my laser pointer last?
After the price have been set and the options have been reviewed, the enthusiast must put in mind that these devices have a lifespan to be considered. Others may provide a low 100-500 hours of use while the better versions in the market can last you as long as 5000+ hours with a 3-6 month warranty.
Now these tips are definitely a good idea to keep in mind to make your green laser pointer purchase a total walk in the park.

When a Green Laser Pointer is the Perfect Tool
There are thousands of different varieties of a green laser pointer you can buy online for just about any application that it may be needed for. So how do you know when a laser pointer is the perfect tool for your needs? There are a few simple things you can keep in mind when considering any gadget.
1. What do you need the laser for?
This is a pretty important question because it will ultimately determine what type of green laser you go with. For instance, if you are going to use it for spotting purposes or for search and rescue where you will need the laser to produce a bright beam for several miles or more, its important to get a high power model. If you are only using it for a presentation or speech you may be giving then you probably want to consider a smaller power of laser.
2. Will the laser really help you out?
This question will be easier to answer for some individuals who know what they will be using the pointer for. Lets consider some applications for a laser: star gazing for astronomy, laser sight lining, military deployment for targeting & intimidation, scientific experiments, or to simply have fun. A green laser pointer can be ideal for certain applications especially those where distance is important. Green is produced at a beam of light at 532nm which is the brightest light frequency in the visible light spectrum, which just means that green appears as the brightest color to the human eye.
3. Is a laser to cheap or too expensive?
Because every manufacturer uses different materials and costs to produce their products, the price will change from model to model. This will probably be one of the biggest determining factors whether or not you buy a laser, so its important to compare items of the same power as far as their price is concerned. You will find different prices for different models, even though the power may be the same. For example, you may see a cheap 100mW for $99 and a 100mW for $299, so how do you know which is the better laser?
Well, one’s that seem too good to be true usually are. The cheaper green laser pointer models out there will not have certain safety measures and features that lower the value and therefore the quality of the piece. Think of your budget and where it stands, then look for the best quality laser within that price range as this will actually last you. A very cheap laser can burn out in less than a week and have no warranties making them obsolete and a high risk purchase. A high quality pointer may have a slightly higher sale price online, but will last a long time and have a valid warranty to back the laser up.
There are a few things you should always keep in mind whenever you are considering a green laser pointer as a tool you need to buy. Remember that too cheap does not mean a good deal and to put in a little bit of research to ensure that any laser that you do like meets a few quality standards that you have set yourself. If you are going to spend on a laser, you want to make sure that is the best valued laser pointer money can buy.
James is an avid Green Laser Pointer fan and owns over 50 varieties himself. He prefers lasers from reputable sources like Thinklasers.com, the web’s leading United States based source for Green Lasers.
