Plug-in Hybrids: Renewable Energy Solution of the Month

Support Climate Denial Crock of the Week – go to www.greenmanstudio.com This video inaugurates a new series, that will augment, but not replace, “Climate Denial Crock of the Week”. Many people seem to think dealing with climate change will bring poverty and limit human development. The truth may be exactly the opposite. Moving to a world of where we aren’t fighting each other over the last few drops of oil, where energy is free, will mean a better life, with greater opportunities even for an expanding population. If we make the right decisions, we could be on the verge of the most prosperous period in human history. Climate Denial Crocks will be back soon to tweak trolls and ding deniers. http www.environmentamerica.org www.udel.edu www.udel.edu newenergynews.blogspot.com climateprogress.org

A Homemade Wind Turbine (Free Energy)

I DID NOT BUILD THIS OR MAKE THE VIDEO, just posting it bcz I encourage everyone to invest in their own. This is a test run of the guys newly made wind turbine. If these links do not work, just google “Build your own Wind Generator”.. www.thekevdog.com www.instructables.com www.forcefieldmagnets.com Output depends entirely on wind speed, windy days will yeild more power. smaller units 5′-10′ average 50-500 watts larger units 11′-20′ produce on average between 500 watts-up (professionally 21′ and larger up to 7.5 Kw and up) Power is defined as the rate at which work is done or energy is consumed. The formula for average power is acquired by dividing work by the time needed to perform work: P = W/t. Power has units of newton-meters per second or joules per second or watts A kilowatt-hour is the electrical energy consumed in one hour at the constant rate of one kilowatt. The average household in the United States uses about 8, 900 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. Here are some math formulas to consider…(source: www.awea.org Because air has mass and it moves to form wind, it has kinetic energy. You may remember from science class that: kinetic energy (joules) = 0.5 xmx V2 where: m = mass (kg) (1 kg = 2.2 pounds) V = velocity (meters/second) (meter = 3.281 feet = 39.37 inches) Usually, we’re more interested in power (which changes moment to moment) than energy. Since energy = power x time and density is a more convenient way to express the mass of flowing air, the

Eco Hotels, Volvo, and Dog Days

Although humanity deserves a pat on the back for improvements in eco-friendliness over the last decade, you will have to acknowledge that said improvements are still insufficient for us to honestly say to our children that we proudly give them their greatest inheritance on Earth – that is, the Earth itself.

Fortunately, we have good news that brighten up our day and make us believe once again that there is still hope for humanity and for the Earth. The good news comes from eco-friendly hotels, a top car manufacturer’s efforts to go green, and environment-friendly pet care options.

Starwood Hotels

For businessmen and frequent travelers, the search for eco-friendly hotels can be a frustrating one especially when one considers the general wastage of resources from the toilet paper to the electricity that happens inside hotels and motels.  Fortunately, the popular Starwood hotel chain, which is composed of the Sheraton, W Hotels and St. Regis brands, has advocated eco-chic.

Supposedly, eco-chic pertains to the blending of Starwood’s signature style and comfort with adherence to rigorous eco-friendly measures as recommended by the United States Green Building Council.  It has the council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification to show for it.

Among the eco-friendly features of the new hotels are high-efficiency kitchen appliances and compact fluorescent light bulbs to conserve energy, low-flow toilets to conserve water, and even recycling bins in the public areas and guest rooms.  If all goes according to plan, the Starwood hotels should be the best option in green accommodations.

Volvo

Cars are not exactly the most eco-friendly transportation available to us at present.  Consider this fact of life:  If you drive your average car for 10,000 miles yearly, it would have produced 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide for every year of use.  And that environmental cost does not include its manufacture and disposal.

Volvo has made their truck manufacturing plant carbon neutral, which is a welcome breath of fresh air indeed, pun not intended. Their Umea Sweden plant uses an ice-cold underground river for cooling purposes, thus, making way for significant energy usage daily.  It is a very cool eco-friendly idea indeed.

Now, if only other car manufacturers will follow suit. Or better yet, if the idea of water-powered vehicles can catch on with these manufacturers, then better for us and for the environment.

Pet Care

The human efforts to protect the environment have gone to the dogs, so to speak. Nowadays, pet owners have a variety of eco-friendly pet care options to choose from. You have organic dog food, eco-friendly toys for your cats and dogs as well as biodegradable bags for your pet’s poop. With the internet, you ought to find a pet care provider that will provide all these options without draining your pockets.

From hotel accommodations to car manufacture to pet care, we have so many more eco-friendly choices.  It is up to us to choose the best one that fits our needs and wants while still thinking of the environment’s welfare.  Soon, you might progress from a C- to perhaps a B- for action.

Confirm for drafts around electric outlets and switches. If ever the walls around them are not insulated properly there can be some significant heat loss. Changing some of the gaskets and installing them at the back of the covers can cut down air flow.

3. Duct Leakage Test

Check the attic hatch and re-insulate it. Heat within the home is rising and will exit through the open hatch.

4. Efficiency & Safety Test

The baseboards are another place to search for air drafts. Look for a small gap between the underside of the ground and the drywall. The gaps may be stuffed with caulk.

Wind Turbine Shadow Flicker and Noise, Byron Wisconsin

When industrial wind turbines which are 40 stories tall are sited too close to people’s home there is trouble with noise and shadow flicker. Wind developers deny these problems exist and in the state of Wisconsin want to put them 1000 feet from houses. That’s 350 steps. This video shows what happens when wind turbines are irresponsibly sited. The nation is slowly waking up to the downside of wind energy. Developers lie to residents about the impacts these machines will have on the landowners and neighbor’s lives. They take advantage of those of us who want to do the right thing for our environment by telling us there will be no problem with noise, no problem with shadows, and no problem with putting turbines in bird migration flyways. The truth will out, eventually. For the residents in the town of Byron, Fond du Lac county, the truth is what they live with every single day. There is a place for wind energy. It’s just not beside a person’s home.

20% renewable energy by 2020

Raising the share of renewable energy from 8.5% to 20% in the overall energy consumption is a necessary contribution to the global fight against climate change and towards better control over our energy dependence. The various uses of renewable energy are examined: electricity through wind and hydraulic energies; electricity or heat through geothermal and solar energies; electricity, heat, and biofuel coming from biomass. The EU is a world leader in the use and deployment of technologies that exploit renewable energy sources, providing over 350.000 jobs and an annual turn-over of € 30 billion.
